Wednesday November 26th, 2014 was a landmark day for Sung Lee. At the world renowned Apollo Theater in Harlem, NYC Sung took home the title of “Amateur Night: Super Top Dog,” and was crowned champion of the 2014 Season Grand Finale. Sung won over the Apollo crowd with his solo vocal beatbox routine and was awarded a $10,000 cash prize. Just two weeks prior to the “Amateur Night” Finals, he had recently won “Kollaboration Star 2014,” the nation’s premiere Asian American and Pacific Islander talent competition.
Since 1934, the historic Apollo Theater has served as a launching pad for many iconic figures in entertainment including the Jacksons, James Brown, Gladys Knight, Lauren Hill, and many others. Out of thousands of auditioning acts this year, Wednesday’s culminating event held the top 9 contestants in the adult “Super Top Dog” category, as well as the top 3 contestants in the “Child Stars of Tomorrow” category. Sung received a standing ovation by performing his unassisted human beatbox routine, showcasing a mix of genres including hip hop, electronic music, house, and dubstep. The show was judged entirely by audience applause, measured by a meter over the 1,500 seat theater. Lee received the loudest applause in the contest by a winning score of 88 points.
